Snake River Farms to sell famous Kurobuta Pork in America

(Boise, ID) - Snake River Farms, known for its premium American Kobe Beef, will now sell American Kurobuta Pork throughout the United States beginning this month. Kurobuta (Japanese black hog), is 100% pure all-natural Berkshire Pork. While other crossbreeds are available, Snake River Farms is one of the few brands offering 100% purebred Berkshire, insuring a consistently wonderful eating experience. Kurobuta pork is celebrated in Japan, and has long been the symbol of the highest quality pork available, but has never been widely distributed in the United States, until now.

Its origins date back almost 300 years, when legend has the Berkshire hog being discovered by Oliver Cromwell's army in winter quarters at Reading, the county seat of the shire of Berks in England. Fancied for its good eating quality, the Berkshire breed was refined in the early 1800's and has remained pure ever since. Years later, Berkshire hogs were given to the Japanese by the British government as a diplomatic gift. From that point on, demand increased and still exists today for its superior taste, texture, and marbling.

Snake River Farms American Kurobuta Pork is lean, with small, fine streaks of marbling that makes each cut sweet, tender, and juicy. "Unlike traditional white pork that tends to be bland and dry, Kurobuta Pork is darker in color and very flavorful," says Jay Theiler, Snake River Farms marketing director. "It also retains significantly more moisture after cooking which translates into a juicier product, said Theiler."

Initially, Snake River Farms will offer five cuts of Kurobuta Pork in the U.S.: Center Cut Loins, Prime Rib of Pork (Rack of Pork), 1/3 Boneless Loin, Tenderloin, and Sirloin. Additional cuts, Single Rib Belly, Collar, Pork Shoulder, and 3 Piece Ham will be available primarily for Japan. "This will complement our Kobe Beef products and will be a natural addition for our foodservice and retail customers," said Theiler.

Utilizing all natural production methods, Snake River Farms raises its American Kurobuta Pork with great care on small family farms in the Midwest.

No extenders, sodium, or water are ever added to their products. Taste tests comparing American Kurobuta Pork (Berkshire) to other common pork varieties consistently show that consumers prefer Kurobuta. In fact, the National Pork Producers Council conducted a taste test using 25 quality traits, and Kurobuta pork ranked #1 in 19 of them, including tenderness and juiciness.
